Growing a herb garden on your balcony is one of the easiest and most rewarding ways to bring freshness into your home. As a gardening expert, I often recommend this to beginners because herbs are low-maintenance and thrive well in containers.

Start with the right herbs. Choose ones that suit your climate and kitchen habits. For most UK balconies, herbs like basil, mint, parsley, thyme, rosemary, chives, and coriander grow beautifully. They don’t need much space and respond well to pruning.

Pick the right containers. You can use pots, railing planters, or even repurposed tins—just make sure there are drainage holes. Herbs hate waterlogged soil, so a good-quality potting mix with proper drainage is essential.

Give them sunlight. Most herbs need at least 4–6 hours of sunlight daily. A south or west-facing balcony is ideal. If sunlight is limited, go for shade-tolerant herbs like mint or parsley.

Water with care. Herbs don’t like wet feet. Water when the top inch of soil feels dry—usually every 2–3 days in summer, less in winter.

Harvest regularly. Pinch off leaves as you need them. This encourages bushier growth and keeps the plant healthy.

A herb garden doesn’t just look and smell amazing—it also saves money and adds flavour to your meals. Whether you have a big balcony or a tiny ledge, herbs are the perfect starting point for your gardening journey.
